Traffic bridges Sneek

Sneek is home to two unique structures: timber viaducts with a free span of 32 meters. Their complex form, the fact that such a span had never before been achieved in timber, and the design load in the highest traffic class, make the design a technical balancing act on a razor’s edge. The viaducts provide the support structure for the road surface with a lattice of curved and twisted rafters in laminated wood. The concept was realized thanks to the fact that all the parties involved viewed apparent impossibilities as problems to be solved.
When creating this special structure, acetylated wood (Accoya) was used. The pre-stressing of the wooden beams was also groundbreaking for timber structures.
