Startstation E-lijn, Den Haag

De komende jaren wordt een sterke groei verwacht van het aantal passagiers op Den Haag Centraal. Om in de toekomst meer ruimte te kunnen creëren voor het treinverkeer heeft de E-lijn, onderdeel van het grotere project RandstadRail, een nieuw startstation gekregen naar ontwerp van architectenbureau ZJA. Met het Startstation E-lijn heeft Den Haag een ruimtelijk en herkenbaar station gekregen waar reizigers makkelijk en snel tussen Den Haag en Rotterdam kunnen reizen.

Overkapping van perrons

De blikvanger van het station is de overkapping van de perrons, die bestaat uit gebogen glas en staal. Een overdekte looproute in de vorm van een expressieve luifel verbindt het nieuwe kolomvrije station met de hal van Den Haag Centraal. De RandstadRail stopt dichtbij de NS-stationshal, de overkapping van de halte loopt door, zodat reizigers snel en droog van het Startstation E-lijn naar Den Haag Centraal kunnen. Het startstation bevindt zich langs de rand van het busplatform en hoog boven de Anna van Buerenstraat.

Slanke constructie

De RandstadRail bereikt het station via een lang viaduct. Deze voert de RandstadRail tot meer dan twaalf meter boven maaiveld over het Bernhardviaduct naar het station. Om de impact van het toe leidende tracé op de omgeving, en dan met name de woonwijk Bezuidenhout-West, zo klein mogelijk te houden is het aangelegd op een slank ontworpen viaduct. Dit is bereikt door de keuze voor een stalen draagconstructie met grote overspanningen. Hierdoor blijft de ruimtelijke impact op maaiveld beperkt en wordt het uitzicht voor omwonenden zo min mogelijk belemmerd. Bovendien heeft de slanke constructie een minimale impact op de stedelijke omgeving.

Herkenbaarheid en comfort

De transparante overkapping van staal en glas geeft de halte een ruime maat en zorgt voor herkenbaarheid en comfort voor wachtende reizigers. Met de sculpturale vorm van de overkapping en luifel is een opvallend station gecreëerd dat rekening houdt met de menselijke schaal. Tegelijkertijd houdt het station overtuigend stand tussen de omringende megacomplexen en valt het op in de stedelijke omgeving.

Parametrisch ontwerp

Het ontwerp van de ruimtelijke overkapping is door ZJA en Knippers Helbig  met behulp van een parametrisch computermodel tot stand gekomen en geoptimaliseerd, waarbij de uitslagen ten behoeve van de productie direct uit het model gegenereerd konden worden. Hierdoor werd het mogelijk om koud gebogen glas te gebruiken dat ter plekke is geïnstalleerd. De gedetailleerde parametrische studie heeft tot een optimaal economisch ontwerp en minimaal gebruik van materiaal geleid door inzet van een genetisch-algoritme.

Unieke architectonische identiteit

Met het Startstation E-lijn heeft Den Haag een ruimtelijk en herkenbaar station gekregen met een unieke architectonische identiteit dat reizigers een aantrekkelijk en modern openbaar vervoer overstappunt biedt. Het station heeft een elegant ontwerp en een opvallende luifel waar reizigers gemakkelijk hun weg kunnen vinden. Het station is een icoon geworden voor Den Haag en zet de stad ook internationaal op de kaart. Het Startstation E-lijn heeft de voormalige, sombere achterkant van Den Haag Centraal getransformeerd tot een aantrekkelijke entree tot de stad Den Haag.

De bouw van het Startstation E-lijn is door ProRail uitgevoerd, in opdracht van de gemeente Den Haag en aannemer BAM Infra NL was verantwoordelijk voor de bouw.

With the number of passengers increasing significantly in the coming years, a separate lightrailstation, a design by the architectural studio ZJA, has been constructed next to The Hague Central Station to increase capacity and create more space for train traffic. The lightrailstation has given The Hague a spacious and recognizable station where travellers can travel easily and quickly between the cities of The Hague and Rotterdam.

Roofing of platforms

The showpiece of the station is the roof of the platforms, which consists of curved glass and steel. A covered walkway in the shape of an expressive canopy connects the new column-free lightrailstation with the main hall of The Hague Central Station. The light rail vehicles (LRVs) stop close to the main hall of the NS station, the canopy of the stop extends so that travellers can transfer quick and dry from the lightrailstation to The Hague Central Station. The station is located along the verge of the bus platform and high above the Anna van Buerenstraat.

Slender construction

The tracks arrive at the station via a long viaduct that carries the LRVs to the station at more than twelve meters above ground level. To minimize the impact of the approaching LRVs on its surroundings, and in particular the residential area Bezuidenhout-West, the design of the viaduct has been given a slender look. This has been achieved by means of a steel structure that enables a large span between the columns. As a result its spatial impact at ground level is reduced and restrictions in the view of surrounding residents are minimized. Moreover, the slender construction has a minimal impact on the urban environment.

Recognisability and comfort

The transparent roof of gives the station a spacious appearance that provides recognisability and comfort for waiting travellers. Due to the sculptural shape of the roof and canopy, a striking lightrailstation has been created that takes the human scale well into account. At the same time, the station stands firm between the surrounding mega-complexes and draws attention to its urban context.

Parametric design

ZJA together with Knippers Helbig developed the design of the spatial roof structure with a parametric design model that generated and analysed the structure while providing geometrical and structural optimization. The outcome of this optimization allowed for the use of single-curved and cold bent glass. The detailed parametric study has led to an optimal economic design and minimal use of material by using a genetic algorithm.

Unique architectural identity

With the lightrailstation, The Hague has been given a spatial and recognizable station with its own unique architectural identity that offers passengers an attractive and modern public transport transfer. The station has an elegant design and a striking awning where travellers can easily find their way. The station has become an icon for The Hague and has contributed to its international recognition. The lightrailstation has transformed the former, gloomy rear of The Hague Central Station into an attractive entrance to the city of The Hague.

The construction of the lightrailstation was managed by ProRail, commissioned by the municipality of The Hague, with contractor BAM Infra NL building the new station.
