In dit gebouw is een deeltjesversneller voor kernfysisch onderzoek gevestigd. Deze werd in 1966 geschonken door het Philips Natuurkundig Laboratorium. Door de functie van het gebouw, was een bunkerachtige uitstraling vrijwel onvermijdelijk, maar de architect heeft dit door de afgeronde vorm weten te verzachten. Wel maakt het als het ware een vuist naar het veel grotere naastgelegen TNO-gebouw.
