Herman de Groot Ingenieurs heeft het installatieconcept ontwikkeld voor de nieuwe, volledig geïsoleerde Human Bio Safety Laboratoria (HBSL3) binnen de High Containment Unit van het instituut. De technologie is zodanig ontworpen en beveiligd dat de besmettelijke ziektekiemen het gebouw niet kunnen verlaten.
Het voorkomen van het ontsnappen van virussen vindt plaats door primaire en secundaire inperkingen. Bij primaire inperkingen kan worden gedacht aan het werken in veiligheidskasten en binnen bepaalde procedures. Met secundaire inperkingen wordt onder andere bedoeld het creëren van onderdrukzones, luchtdichte ruimten (containment), filtering van toevoer- en afvoerlucht en sterilisatie van afvalwater.
