Plaza Passport Zaventem

This project is part of the new ‘Look & Feel’ designed by CONIX RDBM Architects. This innovative ‘Look & Feel’ aims to create a unique atmosphere for the airport in Zaventem. One that is less stressful and more fun. One that makes the airport an experience in itself. We want it to start the moment the traveller steps off the train, out of the bus or car—the moment they truly arrive at the airport. In fact, the entrance to the airport is not even a door. It is an invisible line that connects the traveller with their destination.

A place of peace has been created at the Plaza Passport square. The canopies contribute to the peacefulness, while also providing shelter. Various types of vegetation, including hedges, shrubbery and groups of trees offer safety and security as well as softening the built-up environment.

This was all made possible by a collaboration with LiPS and Avantgarden. CONIX RDBM Architects worked out the new look and feel for the airport, detailing everything in a ‘Look & Feel handbook’. The assignment included the development of a unique design style for the airport, the sketch design for the spatial elements and the bus station. These guidelines will give input to all future projects in the ‘Look & Feel’ zone.

The ‘Look & Feel’ is a guideline in which a uniformity has been worked out from sketched plans of spatial elements such as barriers, balustrades, awnings and canopies, benches, lighting, trash receptacles, signalisation, totems, porticoes, paving and footpaths and more …

The ‘Look & Feel’ consists of five conceptual elements: a human scale; timelessness and coherency; sustainability and warmth; functionality; and proportions and harmony.

As part of the design, the human scale and the search for the right proportions were strictly observed, breaking the large scale of the infrastructure.
